Abstract:

Background: Boric acid (BA) is commonly used as pesticide, disinfectant and wood preservative. Its ingestion can cause serious organ damages resulting in death. Case report: A 19 year old man was found dead with two empty packs of BA tablets in vicinity of his body. On autopsy examination, brownish stains along with right angle of mouth and right nostril were found. Stomach was damaged with hemorrhagic gastritis. All internal organs including liver, kidney, spleen and brain were congested. The toxicological analysis of viscera confirmed boron ion toxicity. Discussion: Boric acid is a moderately toxic compound that is a mucosal corrosive agent affecting upper respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. It can also act as a generalized cellular poison, and thus all end organs including liver, kidneys, brain and gastrointestinal tract are prone to its toxicity. Massive BA poisoning mostly occurs in adults as a result of suicide attempt. Early aggressive hydration and hemodialysis can prevent its mortality. Conclusion: A dead body with erythematous rash, redness of skin, bluish green color of vomitus and fecal matter, corrosive changes in oral and nasal cavity and multiple organ damages can be highly suggestive of BA poisoning.   How to cite this article: Rani M, Meena MC. The reproductive toxicity of boric acid.

Previous studies on the reproductive toxicity of boric acid have indicated that male rodents suffer testicular atrophy after treatment. There were, however, no studies of the potential effects on female fertility or on the neonate. In addition, no study described the development of the testicular lesion, thought to be related to the mechanism of toxicity. A Reproductive Assessment by Continuous...

Severe Hyponatremia Due to Valproic Acid Toxicity

Hyponatremia is a very commonly encountered clinical entity with potentially dangerous effects and for which many precipitating factors have been identified. We present a case of valproic acid (VPA) overdose causing profound hyponatremia, with one of the lowest serum sodium levels ever documented in literature. A 54-year-old woman with hypothyroidism, hypertension and bipolar disorder presented...

Sudden death due to the Acetone toxicity

Propanone is a volatile liquid that can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation, dermal and is distributed throughout the body. In this study, a fatal case involving acetone poisoning, who was worked in the Red Crescent Medical Center is presented. The deceased was found four hours after death. He was a 25-year-old male nurse and not married. There are the history of smoking since four years ago, ...

Loci Contributing to Boric Acid Toxicity in Two Reference Populations of Drosophila melanogaster

Populations maintain considerable segregating variation in the response to toxic, xenobiotic compounds. To identify variants associated with resistance to boric acid, a commonly-used household insecticide with a poorly understood mechanism of action, we assayed thousands of individuals from hundreds of strains. Using the Drosophila Synthetic Population Resource (DSPR), a multi-parental populati...

Reproductive toxicology. Boric acid.

Boric acid (BA), widely used for both medicinal and nonmedicinal purposes, was known to adversely affect reproduction and fertility in rodents. NIOSH, in evaluating the literature prior to writing a Criteria Document, asked NIEHS to perform an RACB study on BA to generate both structural and functional data to be used for setting exposure criteria (Fail et al., Fundam Appl Toxicol 17:225-239 [1...
